Beetroot has had quite a makeover.
Once known mainly as a humble root vegetable, it is now marketed as a “superfood,” natural pre-workout, blood-pressure remedy and even a detox drink.
But how much of this is supported by science?
The answer is more nuanced than social media often suggests. Beetroot is certainly nutritious, and its naturally occurring dietary nitrates have been studied extensively. However, some popular claims go far beyond what human research can currently support.
So let's separate the evidence from the marketing.
1. Claim: Beetroot Will Instantly Lower Your Blood Pressure
Beetroot is naturally rich in inorganic nitrate (NO₃⁻). Through a process involving the mouth and digestive system, nitrate can contribute to the production of nitric oxide, which helps regulate blood-vessel dilation.
Clinical trials have investigated whether this translates into lower blood pressure. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 trials involving adults with hypertension found that beetroot juice was associated with an average reduction of approximately 5 mmHg in clinical systolic blood pressure. However, the researchers rated the certainty of the evidence as low, and the effect was not significant for 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure.
Reality Check
- It is not an instant cure. A glass of beetroot juice should not be expected to normalise high blood pressure.
- The amount and form matter. Research on blood pressure commonly uses nitrate-rich beetroot juice rather than ordinary servings of cooked beetroot.
- It does not replace medication. Anyone diagnosed with hypertension should continue appropriate medical treatment and discuss dietary changes with their healthcare professional.
2. Claim: Beetroot “Detoxes” Your Liver
This is one of the claims I would be most cautious about.
Beetroot contains compounds such as betalains and betaine, which have biological and antioxidant properties. This has led to numerous claims that beetroot “flushes toxins” from the liver.
But that conclusion goes much further than the evidence allows.
Your liver and kidneys already perform the body's major detoxification and waste-processing functions. There is no good evidence that drinking beetroot juice “flushes toxins” from the liver after eating an unhealthy diet or drinking alcohol.
Reality Check
Laboratory and animal research can help scientists understand how beetroot compounds behave biologically, but those findings should not automatically be translated into claims that a beetroot drink detoxifies human organs.
Eating whole beetroot can certainly contribute fibre and micronutrients to your diet.
It's nutrition—not detoxification.
3. Claim: Beetroot Is a Natural Pre-Workout for Everyone
This is one of the stronger claims surrounding beetroot.
The nitrate content has been investigated extensively for its potential effects on exercise physiology.
A large 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis involving 123 studies and 1,705 participants found that nitrate supplementation was associated with a small improvement in exercise performance. The effect appeared particularly relevant for exercise lasting approximately 2–10 minutes, and beetroot juice was among the forms associated with beneficial effects.
More recent evidence continues to support a modest effect on some measures of aerobic performance. However, the effect is not necessarily the same for highly trained athletes or every type of exercise.

For example, research specifically examining high-intensity interval and sprint exercise has not consistently demonstrated improvements in peak or mean power output.
4. Claim: Raw Beetroot, Cooked Beetroot and Beetroot Powder Are All Equivalent
This is an important distinction that social media often overlooks.
The nutritional composition of beetroot can vary according to the variety, growing conditions, processing and preparation method.
And when the specific objective is dietary nitrate, the amount delivered by a food or supplement matters.
Research has also shown that the effectiveness of nitrate supplementation can depend on the form, dose, timing and duration of supplementation.
The Reality Check
Don't assume:
Fresh beetroot = beetroot juice = beetroot powder = concentrated beetroot shot
They can have very different nitrate concentrations.
If you're eating beetroot simply as a vegetable, you don't need to obsess over achieving a “clinical dose.” Whole beetroot provides fibre and other nutrients that concentrated products may not provide in the same way.
There is also an interesting connection with oral bacteria. Nitrate's conversion to nitric oxide involves bacteria in the mouth, and research suggests that disrupting this process can reduce some of nitrate's physiological effects.
5. Claim: Beetroot Is Safe for Absolutely Everyone
For most healthy people, beetroot is simply a nutritious vegetable.
But individual circumstances matter.
Kidney Stones
Beetroot is among foods known to contain significant amounts of oxalate. Dietary oxalate can contribute to urinary oxalate levels, which is relevant to people prone to calcium-oxalate kidney stones.
This doesn't mean everyone needs to avoid beetroot.
It means that people with a history of calcium-oxalate kidney stones should discuss their diet with an appropriate healthcare professional, rather than following generic wellness advice online.
Digestive Sensitivity
Beetroot also contains fermentable carbohydrates, and larger servings may cause digestive symptoms in some people with IBS or other sensitivities. Tolerance varies considerably from person to person.
And Then There's Beeturia
Have you ever eaten beetroot and subsequently noticed pink or reddish urine or stool?
This is called beeturia and is generally harmless.
However, red urine should not automatically be dismissed as beeturia—particularly if it occurs without eating beetroot or is accompanied by other symptoms. Blood in the urine can have many causes and warrants medical assessment.
🌿 So, What Is Beetroot Actually Good For?
After removing the hype, beetroot still has plenty going for it.
For Everyday Nutrition
Whole beetroot provides fibre, folate, potassium and plant compounds, including betalain pigments.
For Cardiovascular Health
Its nitrate content may contribute to vascular function and modest blood-pressure reductions in some people.
For Exercise
Nitrate-rich beetroot products may provide a small performance benefit in certain forms of exercise, particularly aerobic activities.
What It Doesn't Do
- ❌ Acts as a liver detox
- ❌ Cure hypertension
- ❌ Burn belly fat
- ❌ Cure anaemia
- ❌ Replace prescribed medication
- ❌ Act as a miracle disease-prevention treatment
The Sensible Way to Eat Beetroot
For general health, whole beetroot is an excellent addition to a varied diet.
Try it:
- Roasted with other vegetables
- Grated into salads
- Added to soups
- Blended into a balanced smoothie
- Steamed or cooked as part of a meal
